PLA Coated Paper Use For Cups

PLA Coated Paper Use For Cups

PLA-coated paper is cup stock paper with a polylactic acid barrier layer instead of polyethylene. The base paper is the same food-grade cup board you would use with PE; what changes is the coating — a plant-derived polyester that is industrially compostable to EN 13432, and that behaves differently from PE in heat, moisture and recycling terms. This page is written for buyers who have to justify the specification: what PLA coating actually is, which drinks it suits, what it does and does not exempt you from under EU law, and which documents your buyer will ask for. If you need the full cold and hot cup sizing table, see our PE-coated paper for cups page — the base paper grades are the same. We supply: PLA-coated cup stock in single or double coating, in roll or sheet, with FSC-certified base paper on request. We document: base paper grade, coating weight and side, food-contact conformity, and compostability certification scope. Please read section C5 before you quote PLA as an EU compliance advantage — it is not one.

What PLA Coating Is - and What It Is Not

What it is. Polylactic acid is made by fermenting plant sugars - corn starch, sugarcane, cassava - into lactic acid and polymerising it. The feedstock is renewable, so PLA is bio-based. It is also an aliphatic polyester, which means its ester bonds can hydrolyse and be consumed by micro-organisms - but only under specific conditions.

What it is not. It is not "biodegradable" in the everyday sense.

Claim Accurate? Correct wording
"PLA is biodegradable" ❌ Misleading on its own -
"PLA is industrially compostable to EN 13432" ✅ If certified for this product Use this
"PLA degrades in landfill / soil / the sea" ❌ Not at practical rates -
"PLA is plastic-free" ❌ PLA is a polymer Do not use
"PLA is bio-based, so it is not plastic" ❌ Bio-based does not exempt it legally Do not use

The condition that matters: PLA requires industrial composting - sustained temperatures around 55–60 °C, controlled humidity and active microbial conditions - as verified by EN 13432. In ambient soil, seawater or landfill, PLA breaks down at rates comparable to conventional plastics. Any compostability claim must be tied to a certificate held for the specific product, not to the material in general.

PLA vs PE Coating:

Property PE coating PLA coating Water-based barrier*
Feedstock Fossil-based Plant-based Formulation-dependent
Heat resistance Good - stable in hot service Limited - PLA softens near 55–60 °C; hot use needs a heat-resistant grade Good
Best drink fit Hot and cold Cold drinks (its strongest fit) Hot and cold
Moisture barrier Good Lower - PLA is more moisture-sensitive Moderate
Grease resistance Moderate Good Good
Seal window Wide, forgiving Narrower - tighter process control Varies
Paper-stream recyclability Screened out in some mills Harder - film fragmentation, screening and contamination issues Designed for improved repulpability
Industrial compostable No Yes, to EN 13432 Market-dependent
Relative cost Baseline Higher than PE -
EU legal status Plastic → marking + EPR Plastic → marking + EPR (identical to PE) Country-dependent

What fails: specifying a general-purpose PLA grade for a hot cup, then discovering seam failure or coating softening in service

Before you quote a hot cup in PLA, confirm with us: the drink temperature, the dwell time, whether the cup will be lidded or sleeved, and your sealing conditions. We will tell you whether a heat-resistant grade is required rather than let you find out from a customer complaint.

What PLA Does Not Exempt You From in the EU

This section exists because a widespread assumption is wrong. PLA-coated cups are treated as plastic-containing products under EU law, in the same category as PE-coated cups. Bio-based origin does not change the classification.

Directive (EU) 2019/904 (the Single-Use Plastics Directive) defines plastic by polymer structure, without distinguishing fossil-based, bio-based, biodegradable or compostable. PLA is a polymer. The European Commission's 2022 policy framework on bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics reinforced this: bio-based plastic is still plastic in regulatory terms, and biodegradability should not be presented as a solution in itself.

And the direction of travel matters more than today's rules. Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) entered into force on 11 February 2025 and applies from 12 August 2026, replacing the 1994 Packaging Directive. Its stated aim is to make all packaging on the EU market recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030, and it restricts PFAS in food-contact packaging. The widely reported operating threshold is that packaging must reach recyclability grade A–C (approximately ≥ 70 % recyclable by weight) to stay on the market from 2030, with grade C phased out by 2038.

Why that matters to a coated cup: any coating that complicates repulping - PE or PLA - works against that requirement. In several member states PLA is specifically flagged as a contamination risk in the paper recycling stream.

Confirm the exact PPWR grade thresholds and phase-in dates against Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 before publishing this section.

Member-state signals worth knowing:

Netherlands - since 2024, restrictions on free single-use plastic cups for on-site consumption; reusable alternatives required. PLA falls inside these measures because it is plastic.

France - AGEC law; heightened scrutiny of environmental claims, with stricter documentation demanded in tenders for compostability wording.

Bottom line for procurement: PLA is legal, sellable and has genuine brand value. It is not a compliance shortcut, and quoting it as one will not survive a competent EU buyer's review.

Applications Where PLA Coating Wins

Application Why PLA fits
Cold drinks - iced coffee, cold brew, smoothies, soft drinks No heat load, so PLA's temperature limit is irrelevant
Cold desserts and ice cream cups Plant-based positioning plus grease resistance
Salad and cold food bowls Good grease resistance; pairs with compostable collection
Markets with industrial composting collection Where the compostability claim has a real end-of-life pathway
Brand-led launches in sustainability-forward markets Genuine, certifiable story - provided it is worded precisely
Event and venue cups with separate collection Controlled collection improves the credibility of the compost path

Where PLA does not win: high-temperature hot beverages without a heat-resistant grade; markets without industrial composting; applications where paper-stream recyclability is the primary requirement; and any brief that assumes PLA avoids plastic-related obligations.

PLA coated paper for cups

FAQ

Are PLA-coated cups exempt from the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive?

No. PLA is legally defined as plastic under Directive (EU) 2019/904, so PLA-lined cups carry the same marking and EPR obligations as PE-lined cups. Bio-based origin does not exempt them.

Is PLA compostable at home?

PLA-coated cup stock is normally certified for industrial composting to EN 13432, which requires sustained temperatures around 55–60 °C. Home compostable certification is rarer and grade-specific - we will tell you exactly which certificate applies to the product you are buying, and we do not claim home compostability unless it is certified.

Can PLA-coated cups be recycled?

They are a paper-plastic composite. The fiber can be recovered where the mill can separate the coating, but PLA is harder to handle than PE in many repulping lines and is flagged as a contamination risk in some member states. Ask us for the repulpability test data before you make a recyclability claim to your own customers.

Is PLA better than PE for hot drinks?

No. PE has the wider heat tolerance. PLA can be used for hot drinks, but only with a heat-resistant grade, and the practical hot-fill ceiling is lower. Tell us your drink temperature and hold time and we will confirm the grade.

So why choose PLA at all?

Because you want a plant-based coating with a certifiable industrial-composting end of life, and the application suits it - typically cold drinks, or a market with real composting collection. That is a genuine reason. "It avoids the plastic rules" is not.

Do you supply both PE and PLA coating?

Yes - on the same base paper, so your cup line does not need requalifying. We can send matched samples of both on identical board.

What documents can you provide?

Base paper grade declaration, coating declaration, food-contact conformity with migration test report, EN 13432 certificate scope, FSC/PEFC chain of custody where applicable, material composition breakdown by weight, and repulpability data. See the documentation table above.

What is the cost difference?

PLA coating generally costs more than PE. We quote both on the same base paper so you can see the real delta for your specification rather than a percentage quoted out of context.
