Environmental performance of PET film

Feb 17, 2025

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film is widely used in packaging, electronics, printing and construction due to its excellent mechanical properties, optical properties and chemical stability. However, with the increase of environmental awareness, people are paying more and more attention to the environmental performance of PET film. This article will discuss the environmental performance of PET film from the aspects of recyclability, chemical recycling method, CO2 emission reduction, etc.

1. Recyclability

PET film has good recyclability. Waste PET film can be recycled and reused by physical or chemical methods. The physical recycling method mainly breaks the waste PET film into small particles by physical crushing, and then re-makes it into new PET film or other PET products through processes such as cleaning and drying. The chemical recycling method decomposes the waste PET film into monomers by chemical decomposition, and then re-makes it into new PET resin through polymerization reaction. Both recycling methods can effectively reduce resource waste and environmental pollution.

2. Chemical recycling method

In recent years, chemical recycling has received more and more attention in the recycling of PET film. Chemical recycling can remove tiny foreign matter from waste PET film by chemically decomposing it, thereby ensuring the hygiene and purity of recycled PET resin. Recycled PET resin produced by this method can be used to make high-quality PET film that meets the strict requirements of food, medical and other fields.

3. CO2 emission reduction

PET film produced using chemical recycling can not only reduce resource waste, but also significantly reduce CO2 emissions. According to research by Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd., DNP transparent vapor-deposited film, IB-FILM, made from more than 30% recycled PET resin can reduce CO2 emissions compared to PET film using virgin resin. This helps to mitigate climate change and protect the environment.

4. Environmental certification

Many PET film manufacturers have passed environmental management system certifications such as ISO 14001, indicating that they have taken effective environmental protection measures in the production process and reduced the impact on the environment. In addition, some PET film products have also obtained green product certification, proving that they have less environmental impact during their life cycle.

Conclusion

In summary, PET film has good environmental performance. Its recyclability, the application of chemical recycling methods and the effect of CO2 emission reduction all show that PET film is a relatively environmentally friendly material. With the continuous advancement of technology, it is believed that PET film in the future will be more environmentally friendly and make greater contributions to the realization of sustainable development.
