What is Double-Sided Tape?

Double-sided tape is a versatile adhesive solution used to bond two surfaces together. Depending on the specific application, it can be used for temporary fixation or permanent bonding. It consists of three main components: a substrate (such as paper, fabric, film, or foam), adhesive applied evenly on both sides of the substrate, and a release liner or film for easy handling. Some substrates require surface treatment before adhesive application to enhance bonding strength.

With a wide variety of substrate and adhesive material combinations, double-sided tape offers more options compared to other adhesive types.

Types and Features of Double-Sided Tape

PET-Based Double-Sided Tape

Features: Excellent temperature resistance and strong shear strength. Long-term temperature resistance ranges from 100°C to 125°C, with short-term resistance up to 150°C–200°C.

Thickness: Typically 0.048–0.2 mm.

Applications: Ideal for bonding nameplates, LCD screens, decorative items, and panels.

Non-Woven Fabric-Based Double-Sided Tape

Features: High adhesion and good processability. Long-term temperature resistance is 70°C–80°C, while short-term resistance is 100°C–120°C.

Thickness: Usually 0.08–0.15 mm.

Applications: Suitable for nameplates, plastic bonding, automotive, mobile phones, electronics, sponges, rubber, signage, paper products, toys, household appliances, and electronic assemblies.

No-Substrate Double-Sided Tape

Features: Superior adhesive strength, excellent waterproof performance, good processability, and temperature resistance. Short-term temperature resistance is 204°C–230°C, while long-term resistance is 120°C–145°C.

Thickness: Typically 0.05–0.13 mm.

Applications: Commonly used for bonding nameplates, panels, and decorative components.

Foam-Based Double-Sided Tape

Features: Made by coating strong acrylic adhesive on both sides of foam material. It offers strong adhesion, excellent holding power, waterproof properties, UV resistance, and high-temperature tolerance.

Foam Types: EVA foam, PE foam, PU foam, acrylic foam, and high-foam materials.

Adhesive Types: Oil-based adhesive, hot melt adhesive, rubber adhesive, and acrylic adhesive.

Applications: Often used in automotive, construction, and industrial applications.

Hot Melt Adhesive Film

Features: Uniform adhesive thickness, solvent-free, easy to process, and provides excellent adhesion to many materials.

Thickness: Typically 0.1 mm.

Color: Semi-transparent or amber.

Applications: Suitable for bonding nameplates, plastics, and metal parts. It works well on uneven surfaces, with recommended bonding conditions of 132°C–138°C, a bonding time of 1–2 seconds, and a pressure of 10–20 PSI.

How to Choose Double-Sided Tape?

When it comes to choosing the right double-sided tape, it's essential to consider your specific needs and application. There are numerous brands on the market, but selecting a high-quality and eco-friendly product ensures safety and reliability. Comparing products carefully helps you identify the best option.

Double-sided tape comes in many types and serves a wide range of purposes. Since different tapes use different adhesive materials, they are designed for specific applications. Therefore, when selecting a double-sided tape, consider both the brand reputation and the intended function.

Why Double-Sided Tape Matters?

Double-sided tape is a practical invention that plays a crucial role in modern industries and households. Whether in the electronics market for bonding phones and computers, the automotive market for attaching trim and components, or the home goods market for securing hooks, furniture, and toys, double-sided tape provides indispensable adhesive solutions.
