What is Glassine Paper?
May 09, 2025
1.1 Material Definition & Manufacturing Process
Glassine paper is a translucent packaging paper made by super calendering. The core production process includes:
Pulp refining: Nordic softwood pulp (ISO brightness ≥ 88%)
Impregnation treatment: water-based acrylic coating (solid content 12-15%)
Calendaring: 8-roll super calender (line pressure 300kN/m)
2.1What are the advantages of glassine paper?

1. High smoothness and translucency
After supercalendering, the surface is very smooth, suitable as a release paper substrate or high-end packaging paper.
The translucent appearance makes it beautiful in labels and window packaging.
2. Excellent oil and moisture resistance
The natural paper base structure is specially treated to be oil, water and moisture resistant.
Suitable for food packaging, cosmetic padding, pharmaceutical packaging materials, etc.
3. High strength and tear resistance
Compared with ordinary paper, glassine paper has higher density and tear resistance.
Suitable for stretching, coating, die-cutting and other operations during processing, not easy to break.
4. Good release (as release paper substrate)
As the preferred substrate for silicone oil release paper, it has uniform density and adsorption, and can be coated with various release agents.
With uniform release and good resilience, it is an ideal material for making die-cut tapes, labels and medical patches.
5. Food contact & environmentally friendly
Non-toxic, odorless, can be used for packaging that comes in direct contact with food (such as cheese, candy, chocolate padding, etc.).
Recyclable and degradable, it is the preferred option for green packaging.
